  • Make sure that you get enough sleep. When you miss out on sleep you become tired, and this can contribute to a relapse. Lack of sleep is one of the most common triggers that lead to a relapse so avoid this state whenever possible. Allow plenty of time to rest so that the stress does not catch up with you and cause you to go off track.
  • Do not try to do everything. The holidays are hectic as it is, and you may be flooded with invitations to parties and special events. Pick and choose carefully. Many gatherings will include alcohol and rich foods, both of which may need to be avoided. Do not feel pressured to say yes to everyone and make sure to schedule time to relax each day to lower your relapse risks.
  • If you must attend an event then make sure that you drink nonalcoholic beverages. No one else needs to know what you are sipping on, and a little creativity can keep it that way. Cranberry juice resembles red wine, and pale beverages can call for ginger ale. If you do not make an issue out of it what you drink will not be a problem.
  • Leave when you are ready, no matter what time it is or how long the party has been going on. You can come up with a reasonable explanation before you arrive so that your host is not offended and you do not end up relapsing. Do not let yourself be talked into staying once you are ready to leave, and be polite but firm.
