Comparing Inpatient And Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment

inpatient versus outpatient help, treatment facility options

Substance abuse treatment can be found in both inpatient and outpatient facilities, and the program requirements will depend on the specific facility chosen and the types of treatment methods used. Which type of facility is the right choice for your treatment needs and preferences? The answer depends on many different factors. Inpatient substance abuse treatment involves a long term stay at the facility, and you will stay at the residential facility day and night until your treatment goals have been met. Outpatient programs are offered during the day but you do not stay overnight. Instead you arrive for treatment and then go home at the end of the day or when the treatment sessions are finished. Inpatient facilities will be more costly because of the added expenses due to the overnight stay, but outpatient treatment may not be as effective and could leave you open to bigger relapse risks.

The severity of your addiction or substance abuse will play a role in the type of facility recommended by the physician or the substance abuse and addiction specialist. Any mental health issues will also be taken into consideration, and the amount of support that you have and your unique living situation will also be evaluated before the right substance abuse treatment program is chosen. Inpatient substance abuse help may be more effective in many cases because you are removed from the usual places and friends who may contribute to the substance abuse. Even if you are an inpatient client the success or failure that you face can be different from one program to the next. Individual counseling, group therapy, anger management, nutrition counseling, and other treatment methods will increase the odds of a full and complete recovery.
