Process Addictions and how they may affect you.
If data obtained from counseling periods with gambling addicts will be considered, it’s arguably that addicts also create a tolerance for gambling. Based on studies, the individual’s psychological adjusts towards the amount being gambled so that the addict must wager increasingly more. This is comparable to what goes on to drug addicts and alcoholics. Because the mind builds a tolerance for that regular amount the person bets, your brain develops a necessity to improve the wager and spread to achieve that very same feeling of excitement.
With hoarding, you can become addicted to collecting things because it makes you feel good, and eases the emotional and spiritual pain that you feel. A hoarding addiction can involve many types of items which are collected, even pets. An addiction can be any activity and is simply an inability to stop a behavior even though it is ruining your life or has devastating consequences. A hoarding addiction can be deadly because in some cases medical help has not been able to reach the injured or ill person due to excessive clutter throughout the home.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Some factors that indicate a higher risk for developing OCD includes the following, high-stress lifestyle, pregnancy, a close family member with this illness. Substance abuse can also increase the risks, but for many people who have obsessive-compulsive disorder try drugs or alcohol to stop the compulsions and obsessive thoughts. This, however, can be a catch 22, making an accurate diagnosis hard to reach, causing the symptoms to worsen, and making treatment much more difficult. This causes an addiction to develop, and then there are two conditions that require a professional treatment instead of just one, this is called a dual diagnosis.
Are You Trading Addictions?
The danger of trading addictions is when the new addiction is not as damaging as the original addiction is still there because the emotional wounds have not been healed. This causes a high risk for relapse. One of the most noticeable warning signs of trading addictions is getting the same emotional or physical high from a new activity that you did from the original addiction. In some cases, the addiction that was stopped may be more harmful than the new one leading you to rationalize that it is okay to trade off in this manner.
Just because you use the internet on a regular basis this does not mean you have an internet addiction. You might need to do a lot of research for your job, social media sites may let you stay in contact with distant friends and family, or you may need to spend a lot of time on the internet in order to do school work.
One of the common signs that a shopping addiction may be developing is hiding information about your purchases from your spouse, friends, and family members. A shopping addiction may be a problem because of online activity, or trips to your local stores. It doesn’t matter how you or your spouse do the shopping, what matters is that this activity fills an emotional need and is a destructive force in your life. Do you or your spouse hide what is purchased, either the dollar amount or the purchase itself? Has shopping caused a financial strain? Do you or your spouse shop to feel better? Do you buy things that you do not really need, or buy items in multiples? All of these are signs of a shopping addiction and indicate that there is a problem.
